Sustainability
Sustainability is an integral part of SCHOTT Pharma’s corporate strategy and contributes to our long-term value creation. Long-term orientation was already important to our founders: In 1884, they established the Carl Zeiss Foundation to strengthen employee rights and use company dividends to support social institutions and science.
Today, we continue to align our actions with a clear commitment to diversity, inclusion, human rights, and responsible corporate governance. In response to climate change, we have established concrete measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve resource efficiency in our own operations and in material parts of our supply chain. Our sustainability strategy is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through our products and activities, we in particular contribute to the following four SDGs of the UN.
SDG 3 – Good health and well-being: Our products administer over 25,000 injections per minute around the world.
SDG 5 – Gender equality: We promote equal opportunity and are strong advocates for diverse teams.
SDG 12 – Responsible consumption and production: We pioneer circular packaging solutions in the pharmaceutical industry.
SDG 13 – We decarbonize our operations and value chain in line with our validated SBTi targets.
Based on these commitments and the exchange with our stakeholders, we have developed a holistic approach towards our material ESG (environment, social, and governance) responsibilities, which are indicated by the following key pillars:
Climate action
The decarbonization plans of the SCHOTT Group have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as being aligned with the 1.5°C target for limiting global warming. For SCHOTT Pharma, this particularly includes the use of renewable electricity (through Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) since 2021) and a strong focus on the energy footprint of production processes and infrastructure. For example, we have electrified a fuel-intensive process by implementing membrane-based production of Water for Injection (WFI). In addition, we have optimized our burner setup for vial manufacturing to reduce fuel consumption. Further information can be found in the SCHOTT Pharma Sustainability Report.
Product and supply chain design
For pharmaceutical primary packaging, product and patient safety come first. Without compromising on either, we consider how to reduce the carbon footprint and the need for new fossil-based raw materials.
Our measures include:
- Establishing circular systems for packaging used to deliver pharmaceutical primary packaging products
- An internal ecodesign process to consider environmental aspects from the very beginning of the product life cycle
- Collaboration with partners to further develop product solutions
